Batam vs Bintan: Which Island Should You Pick?

To Batam

The busiest route is HarbourFront to Batam Centre, operated by BatamFast, Sindo Ferry and Majestic Fast Ferry. Ferries run approximately every 30–60 minutes from around 07:40 to 21:50 Singapore time. The crossing takes approximately 60 minutes. Fares from SGD 28 base fare plus a SGD 10 Singapore Passenger Departure Fee; on the return, add IDR 100,000 Batam terminal fee. BatamFast and Majestic charge approximately SGD 43 all-in.

Ferries depart from 5 HarbourFront Avenue, Singapore Cruise Centre (HarbourFront MRT Exit B). Advance booking is recommended on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons; walk-in is usually fine on weekdays.

For Nongsa beach resorts specifically, the Tanah Merah–Nongsa Direct ferry (BatamFast only, approximately 50 minutes, SGD 43 all-in, 8 departures daily 08:00–20:20 Singapore time) is more convenient.

To Bintan (Lagoi resort zone)

All ferry traffic to the Lagoi resort zone goes through Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bandar Bentan Telani (BBT), operated exclusively by Bintan Resort Ferries (BRF). The crossing takes approximately 70 minutes and runs 4 times daily Monday–Thursday, 5 times Friday–Saturday, and 4 times on Sunday. First departure from Singapore: 08:10; last departure: 17:00 Singapore time. Last return from Bintan: 18:35 Bintan time (Batam and Bintan are both WIB, one hour behind Singapore).

Economy class fares (all-in, effective March 2026): SGD 62 one-way per adult, SGD 100 regular return / SGD 110 peak return. Important: check-in closes 90 minutes before departure — plan your last ferry home carefully. Weekend ferries book up; book well ahead for weekends.

For Tanjung Pinang (Bintan's capital city — a very different experience from the Lagoi resort zone): Sindo Ferry from Tanah Merah at approximately SGD 43 one-way before fees (all-in approximately SGD 55–56), crossing approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, roughly 3 departures daily. Check the operator's current timetable before you travel.

Day trip viability

For Bintan Lagoi: the maths are tight. Taking the 08:10 from Tanah Merah, you arrive around 09:20 Bintan time. After immigration and a hotel shuttle, you reach the beach by roughly 10:30–11:00. BRF's 90-minute check-in requirement means you must leave by approximately 17:05 Bintan time to catch the last return (18:35 Bintan time). That leaves roughly 6 hours of usable time. Possible for a day visit, but Bintan's resort experience only really justifies itself over 2+ nights.

Bintan's ferry alone costs SGD 62 one-way all-in (versus approximately SGD 43 all-in for Batam). The real cost gap widens at the hotel level: the cheapest options in Bintan's Lagoi resort zone start at roughly SGD 130 per night, versus under SGD 100 for Batam's mid-range options. The Bintan premium is real — and so is what you get in return at the higher end.

Accommodation in Batam

Batam's range is wide. For urban convenience and easy spa and shopping access, stay near Nagoya (Planet Holiday, BCC Hotel). For beach access, the Nongsa peninsula is the best choice: Turi Beach Resort (private beach, from SGD 180/night) and Montigo Resorts Nongsa (all-villa cliff resort, Singapore Strait views) are the standout properties.

Accommodation in Bintan (Lagoi)

Bintan Lagoi's resorts are built around the beach experience. Typical published rates vary by season; verify current prices on Agoda or Booking.com before confirming a booking.

• Budget end: Mayang Sari Beach Resort and Bintan Lagoon Resort from approximately SGD 130–200/night.
• Mid-range: Angsana Bintan (family-focused, kids splash zone, ~SGD 250–550) and Nirwana Gardens (18-hole golf on site, ~SGD 180–400).
• Luxury: Banyan Tree Bintan (standalone villas with private plunge pools, ~SGD 500–1,500) and The Sanchaya (adults-only, 29 villas, butler service, ~SGD 400–1,200+).
• All-inclusive: Club Med Bintan offers packages of approximately SGD 300–600 per adult for a 2-night stay, covering all meals, watersports and kids clubs.

Note: there are no budget hotels or city options in Lagoi — you are staying in a resort. If you want the flexibility to step out and explore independently, Batam fits better.

Batam

Nongsa's beaches — the private strips in front of Turi Beach Resort, Batam View Beach Resort and Montigo Resorts — are pleasant and calm, with shallow clear water and safe swimming conditions during the dry season (April–October). They are not wide-open stretches of white sand; they are narrow private bays backed by tropical gardens. On a clear day you can see Singapore's east coast skyline from the water — which is either charming or anticlimactic depending on your perspective.

Bintan (Lagoi)

Lagoi Bay is a better beach than Batam's Nongsa. It is wider, whiter, and sees far fewer people, with calm and clear water in the dry season. Trikora Beach (east Bintan, approximately 1 hour from the resorts by private driver) is a wilder, less-developed stretch good for a day excursion.

Verdict: For beach quality as the primary goal with 2+ nights available, Bintan wins. For a day trip, or for combining beach with spa, shopping and food, Batam is the more practical choice.

Batam

Batam's activity list is more varied and more budget-accessible. Full-day spa packages in Nagoya from SGD 60 (four hours of massage, scrub and facial) are among the best value wellness experiences near Singapore. The Nongsa mangrove kayak tour and Ranoh Island snorkelling are strong water options. Golfers have access to six courses — see our golf guide. Bintan

Bintan's activities are more resort-centred and nature-focused. Watersports (jetski, parasailing, kayaking) are available at every Lagoi resort. The firefly tour on the Sebung River is a memorable evening experience. Treasure Bay has a man-made lagoon with cable skiing and water slides. Golfers have four courses including a Jack Nicklaus-designed layout at Bintan Lagoon Golf Club. Snorkelling day trips to nearby islands run from most resorts.

Bintan has no day-spa strip equivalent to Nagoya, no shopping malls and essentially no nightlife. Evening entertainment is what your resort provides.

Food

Batam is the better island for food, in both variety and price. The Harbour Bay seafood area offers a full dinner — chilli crab, grilled prawns, butter clams — for around IDR 200,000 per person at Harbour Bay Seafood Restaurant. In Bintan's Lagoi resort zone, meals are almost entirely from resort restaurants — good quality but expensive (expect SGD 30–60 per head per meal at a higher-end property). If you stay at Club Med, all meals are included. Tanjung Pinang's hawker centres are excellent value, but Tanjung Pinang is 1.5–2 hours each way from Lagoi — not a practical regular option.

Shopping and nightlife

Batam has Nagoya Hill Mall, Batam City Square (BCS), DC Mall and other retail options for electronics, fashion and cosmetics. Nagoya's bars, KTV venues and late-night street food are active through the evening.

Bintan's Lagoi zone has no shopping malls — only small resort shops selling souvenirs and beachwear. There is no nightlife. If shopping or evening entertainment is part of your plan, Batam is the right island.

Batam

Grab works well in Batam's towns; coverage is patchy in Barelang. Taxis are widely available. Private drivers for full-day island tours cost SGD 70–100. Batam Centre to Nagoya is approximately 15 minutes by Grab; Nagoya to Nongsa approximately 30–40 minutes.

Bintan

Transport requires more planning. Grab is officially available in the Lagoi resort zone and in Tanjung Pinang since May 2025, but it is not island-wide — rural areas, northern Bintan and Trikora Beach are not covered. Most Lagoi resorts provide shuttle transfers from BBT terminal and to selected destinations. The BinBin electric shuttle runs within the Lagoi zone with a day pass. For excursions outside Lagoi (Trikora Beach: approximately 1 hour; Tanjung Pinang from Lagoi: approximately 1.5–2 hours), a private driver charter is needed.

Summary: if your plan is resort–beach–restaurant–pool, transport in Bintan is handled. If you want to explore freely beyond the resort zone, budget for a private driver.

Choose Batam if you want to:

• Do a day trip from Singapore (the ferry runs all day; see our day trip guide)
• Keep costs down (the ferry, hotels and food are all less expensive)
• Mix beach, spa, shopping and food in one weekend
• Move around independently without planning transport in advance
• Go as a couple combining spa and seafood with a beach evening
• Go as a family on a mid-range budget

Choose Bintan if you want to:

• A proper resort beach experience — wider white sand, fewer crowds, pristine conditions
• A luxury or honeymoon stay (Banyan Tree Bintan, The Sanchaya)
• An all-inclusive family package (Club Med Bintan, Angsana with kids clubs)
• Top-tier resort golf (Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Bintan Lagoon Golf Club)
• A complete switch-off with no distractions — no malls, no nightlife, no city noise

The one trip type that clearly favours Batam: day trips. Batam's high ferry frequency and long operating window make it by far the better one-day island. Bintan's resort experience does not justify itself in a day.

The one trip type that clearly favours Bintan: a honeymoon or anniversary where the hotel is the entire trip. Batam's Montigo and Turi Beach are very good, but Bintan's Banyan Tree and The Sanchaya operate at a different level of seclusion and service.

Neither island is universally better. Batam is more versatile — accessible, affordable, suited to almost any Singapore weekend. Bintan is more beautiful, but also more expensive and less flexible, delivering its best only over 2+ nights in a resort.
