Family Trip to Batam: Kid-Friendly Guide for Singapore Families

The case for Batam as a family destination from Singapore rests on four things: a short ferry crossing (50–60 minutes, no flight), calm, warm water at the resort beaches, resort hotels built around family stays with supervised kids clubs and dedicated paddling pools, and prices that make a two-night break genuinely affordable.

Budget planning should be done with realistic numbers. The ferry is the fixed cost: at minimum SGD 28 per person one-way, a family of four pays around SGD 300–350 for the return crossing with fees and fuel surcharges, before hotel, food or activities. The food question settles quickly with children: Indonesian cuisine — grilled chicken, rice, fried noodles, satay — is broadly popular with young eaters. Ask staff for "tidak pedas" (not spicy) when ordering for children.

HarbourFront to Batam Centre is the main family route. Ferries depart from Singapore Cruise Centre, 5 HarbourFront Avenue (HarbourFront MRT Exit B). Operators BatamFast, Sindo Ferry and Majestic Fast Ferry run services throughout the day; the first departure is around 07:40 and the last around 21:50 Singapore time. The crossing takes about one hour. Last return ferries from Batam Centre depart around 20:30 local time (Batam is one hour behind Singapore). Sindo fares start from SGD 28 one-way plus the SGD 10 Singapore Passenger Departure Fee; BatamFast and Majestic are around SGD 43 all-in. On the return, a Batam Terminal Fee of IDR 100,000 applies.

Tanah Merah to Nongsa Direct (BatamFast only, ~50 minutes, ~SGD 43 all-in) arrives at Nongsa ferry point, 5–10 minutes from Nongsa resort hotels. Strongly recommended for families staying at Montigo Resorts or Turi Beach — it avoids a 45-minute cross-island drive and its traffic.

Child and infant tickets: Policies vary by operator. Check directly with your chosen operator at booking — do not assume adult fares apply to children or that children travel free.

All passengers including infants need their own passport. Minimum validity: six months from your travel date. Complete the All Indonesia e-Arrival Card for every family member before departure — see the visa and entry guide for details.

Strollers are permitted on board. Fold compact strollers and stow in the cabin luggage area. Arrive at the terminal 60–90 minutes before departure when travelling with young children.

Car seats: GrabFamily, Grab Singapore's car-seat service, is not available in Batam — it operates in Singapore only. Standard Grab and taxi vehicles in Batam do not carry car seats. For families with children who need a seat, the options are: bring a compact travel booster seat, or book direct resort transfers. The Holiday Inn Resort and major Nongsa resorts can arrange transfers from the ferry terminal.

Montigo Resorts Nongsa (Nongsa) is the standout for families seeking a luxury resort experience. Family villas sleep up to six with a dedicated bunk room for children. The supervised kids' programme runs daily activities. Every villa has a private plunge pool. Guests staying here should use the Tanah Merah–Nongsa Direct ferry to arrive resort-side.

Holiday Inn Resort Batam by IHG (Waterfront City) has the most comprehensive kids programme among the hotels on this site: a supervised Kids Club for ages 4–12, open daily 09:00–18:00, with arts and crafts, beach games, cooking classes and junior watersports — included in most family room rates (confirm at booking). The resort also has a separate toddler-depth paddling area alongside the main pool. Sekupang ferry terminal is 15 minutes away; the resort arranges transfers.

Harris Resort Waterfront Batam (Waterfront City, from SGD 120/night) runs the Dino's Kids Club (indoor and outdoor activities), and offers a free scheduled shuttle from Sekupang Ferry Terminal. Good choice for families who want a mid-range waterfront base with kids' programming.

The Turi Beach Resort (Nongsa, from SGD 180/night) offers a private beachfront with calm, sheltered swimming and a lagoon infinity pool. There is no formal Kids Club — the beach and pool are the main draw. Well suited to families with older children who want a quieter, beach-focused stay.

Planet Holiday Hotel & Resort (Nagoya, from SGD 75/night) is the right call if your priorities are a central location and a family-friendly pool. The outdoor pool complex has an adult pool and a separate children's pool. Walking distance from Nagoya hawker streets and the A2 Food Court. No beach access.

Waterpark Top 100 Batu Aji is the most obvious family day out in Batam: 1.5 hectares with a Super Bowl funnel slide, lazy river and a dedicated kids' splash zone for younger children. From SGD 5 per person; book via Traveloka or at the gate. Arrive at opening time to ride the Super Bowl before queues build.

Ranoh Island Snorkeling Day Trip — a private 43-hectare island 20 minutes by speedboat from Batam, with coral reef snorkeling, banana boat, canoe and beach volleyball. Full packages from SGD 188 via Klook (includes Batam Fast ferry and lunch). Best for children comfortable in the water. Check the minimum age with the operator before booking.

Nongsa Mangrove Kayak Tour — a 3-hour guided kayak through tidal channels in Nongsa's mangrove forests. From SGD 45 per person. Better suited to children old enough to paddle, or in a tandem kayak with a parent.

Batam Island ATV Adventure — a 2-hour off-road ride through jungle and village tracks. SGD 55 per person, safety gear included. Check the minimum age and minimum height with the operator before booking.

Barelang Bridge Scenic Drive — the drive across the six Barelang bridges costs nothing beyond your transport. Impressive for children of all ages. Combine with a kelong seafood lunch and it fills a half-day.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple — free entry to one of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. Visually striking, peaceful, and suitable for all ages.

Day 1 — Arrive and waterpark

Take a morning ferry to Batam Centre. Clear immigration and Grab to your hotel to drop bags. Head to Waterpark Top 100 Batu Aji for the main session of the day — ride the Super Bowl before the lunchtime crowd arrives. Return to hotel for rest. Evening: dinner at the Harbour Bay seafood strip (about 20 minutes from Batam Centre by Grab) — udang bakar and ikan bakar are crowd-pleasers for children.

Day 2 — Bridge drive and seafood lunch

Morning: pool or beach at the hotel. Mid-morning: Barelang Bridge scenic drive — book a private driver (SGD 70–100 for up to four passengers; see private driver guide) or take a Grab. Stop for photos at the first bridge viewpoint. Lunch at Barelang Seafood Restaurant. Afternoon: drive back and take an afternoon ferry home. Book earlier departures during school holiday periods.

Nongsa-based variant (Tanah Merah → Nongsa Direct route): Skip the waterpark on Day 1; spend the afternoon at the beach or pool at Turi or Montigo. Day 2: mangrove kayak tour in the morning, Barelang bridge drive in the afternoon before the return ferry.

Dengue and mosquitoes. Batam has a confirmed dengue risk: several districts were declared dengue red zones by health authorities in early 2025. Apply DEET insect repellent to all family members before outdoor time, particularly at dawn and dusk. The rainy season (approximately October to March) carries higher mosquito density. Pack repellent from Singapore; it is also available at Transmart and Giant supermarkets in Batam.

Drinking water. Tap water in Batam is not safe to drink or use for brushing teeth. Bottled water (IDR 3,000–5,000 per 600ml bottle) is universally available. Teach children this habit before arrival.

Sun. UV index is extreme year-round. Apply SPF 50 or higher to children 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours and after water exposure. A rash guard over swimwear extends protection significantly.

Food safety. Established restaurants and busy hawker centres maintain high standards. Be cautious with raw vegetables at very basic street stalls.
